What is in Lip Fillers?
Today’s sophisticated dermal fillers are most commonly made from man-made hyaluronic acid. This is near identical to the hyaluronic acid found naturally in our bodies. Hyaluronic acid is able to retain 1,000 times its own weight in water. For that reason, it’s a great ingredient for hydrating the skin. This means it also works really well as a substance for injectable treatments. It gives a more natural look, and dissolves over time or can be reversed if you do not like the overall result or you feel your lips are too plump.
Due to the fact that hyaluronic acid is found naturally within the body (although in lesser quantities as we age), our bodies naturally accept it. This makes it much safer than other filler substances. It is not permanent, so very worst case scenario if you change your mind, it’s easily sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do Lip Fillers last?
Most dermal filler treatments last between six to eight months. We recommend additional booster top-up treatments every six months to a year for patients who want to achieve year-round plumpness and structure in their lips. For patients who require subtle results, we recommend replenishments on a yearly basis. But every patient is different, so we tailor these top-ups depending on their unique visual needs.
How to reduce swelling after Lip Fillers?
In some cases, lip filler patients may experience swelling in the lip area after having the treatment carried out. The amount of lip filler used on a patient can also have an impact on the risk of swelling occurring. This is a completely normal side effect of lip injections and tends to show through after two days of treatment, before reducing and returning to normality after two weeks. If lip swelling does occur, then patients can apply ice to the lips using an ice pack or an ice cube covered in cloth (so it doesn’t stick to the lip and cause pain). This will help ease any swelling, itching, bruising or pain that may occur as a result of the treatment.
How many syringes do you need for lips?
One syringe distributed appropriately is usually the right amount for most people to start with because you get all-over enhancement while still maintaining a natural appearance. Gradual plumping is key! In our Clinic, we will often start with half a syringe and have the patient come back after a week or two later for another half.” And be weary if it’s your first time getting filler and your doctor suggests more than one syringe. Two syringes is too much for most people in one sitting if we’re going for a natural appearance.
Are Lip Fillers vegan?
The hyaluronic acid used in both Juvéderm and Restylane is made from bacteria, and hence is suitable for vegans. However, other dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid derived from animal sources, so it is best to check first. A secondary consideration is that most pharmaceutical products like dermal fillers go through a period of animal testing before they are considered safe for use on humans.
Do Lip Fillers hurt?
As lip fillers are a non-surgical procedure, they require no invasive surgery, cuts or stitches on the lips. Some patients may feel a slight sense of discomfort when having this injectable treatment. But it is usually very mild. Most patients will just feel a tiny scratch as the injection is applied and a tingling sensation as the filler is injected. We can also apply a local anaesthetic to the treatment area to completely minimise discomfort for patients who are feeling particularly anxious.
Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen or Advil for two days after treatment; also, avoid them for one week prior to treatment
Do not use ice on swollen areas after treatment
Avoid exercise, except for walking, for 24 hours after treatment.
What are the possible side effects?
If you suffer from cold sores, make sure that you have an oral prescription prior to your treatment as it may provoke an outbreak.
Common injection related effects may include:
These symptoms should resolve in 2-7 days.
